"Go Ahead Eagles” footballers have made club history.
For the first time, "Go Ahead Eagles” have etched their name in the ranks of the Netherlands Cup winners, unexpectedly defeating Alkmaar AZ in the final.
The club with a long history triumphed after penalties. Their players were accurate all four times, while AZ failed to convert two penalty shots. Both times, it was nominal underdog goalkeeper Jaris De Busser who made the saves.
AZ was more active in this final, taking more shots (as many as 30), but still ended up losing.
At the end of regular time, the extension began with the penalty shot taken by "Go Ahead Eagles” captain Mats Deijla. He was successful during the penalty shootout as well.
Troy Parrott scored the only goal for AZ.
This is the first trophy for "Go Ahead Eagles” since the 1932-33 season. Prior to this, they had been champions in the Netherlands four times.
