Football is stepping more boldly into the esports arena © UEFA

Spring unexpectedly stopped the whole world, the coronavirus strongly affected the sports industry. Initially deserted stadiums and arenas soon became completely unused, as sports events practically ceased to take place worldwide. Major sports leagues and championships began to look for alternatives. Then all eyes turned to an industry that had long been viewed with a certain disrespect. In this case, we are talking about electronic sports or simply esport.

Football also did not become an exception. The English "Premier" League organized a FIFA game tournament in which even "Premier" League stars competed. Interestingly, the tournament was won by Diogo Jota, who currently shines in the ranks of "Liverpool". UEFA also cast serious nets over the esport industry. In 2020, the virtual European championship was launched, in which the Lithuanian national teams also participated. This idea received huge interest and will be further developed.

It is obvious that esport is gaining increasing importance in the sports industry, which also reflects the fact that the International Olympic Committee is seriously considering the integration of esport into the Olympic Games.
