Former Bayern Munich defender, later working as a scout, has revealed that Raphael Varane could have become not a part of Real Madrid in 2011, but of the Bavarian club. In the summer of 2011, for the then promising 18-year-old center-back, Real paid 10 million euros. According to Willy Sagnol, in the same year Bayern had the opportunity to acquire R. Varane for half the price. "I went to see Varane when he played for the Lens team. He was only 18 at the time, but his maturity was evident in his game. I spoke to the Lens management and found out that they wanted around 4-5 million euros. I informed Bayern about this, but this amount seemed too high to them. Two months after my visit, Varane moved to Real for 10 million euros. For me, as a scout, it was a slap in the face (from the Bayern side)," W. Sagnol said.
