Ukrainian society is shocked - one of the most famous Ukrainian football goalkeepers, Viktor Chanov, died in a hospital in Kyiv on February 8th. The 57-year-old man, who shone in the late 1980s at the Kyiv "Dynamo" club, was taken to the hospital on January 20th, but few knew about it. After the death of the celebrity, the true circumstances of this tragedy began to emerge. The Ukrainian media learned that on the evening of January 20th, unidentified criminals stopped V. Chanov, who was driving home in his SUV, and brutally beat him. The man was beaten so severely that his skull cracked, and he was diagnosed with multiple bone fractures in the hospital. The sports celebrity was taken to the city hospital on the right bank of Kyiv, where he underwent urgent brain surgery. Doctors were hoping that the football legend would survive - the next day he tried to recover, but doctors deliberately induced an artificial coma to minimize complications. The man was in the intensive care unit for more than two weeks and on Wednesday he passed away in Anapilin. Doctors do not explain the precise cause of death. Relatives insisted that only a few of Chanov's friends helped in this difficult moment, and the famous "Dynamo" club, although aware of the tragedy, did not even try to inquire about the man's health. Why and who brutally beat V. Chanov is being investigated by the local prosecutor's office. It is unknown whether this is related to financial matters or the legend became a victim of random violence. V. Chanov, who played for the Kyiv "Dynamo" team for eight years (1982-1990), became the champion of the USSR three times, raised the USSR football cup five times, won the Taurus Cup tournament in 1986, was the vice-champion of the 1988 European Championship in the USSR team, and was recognized as the best goalkeeper in the USSR in 1986. The celebrity played not only in Ukraine and Russia but also continued his career in Israel for several years.
