This summer, Gianluigi Buffon, who returned to Turin's Juventus, inscribed himself in the pages of Italian football history.
The 41-year-old goalkeeper appeared on the field in a match against SPAL. It was his 903rd match in his club career. No other Italian had previously managed to surpass such a number.
Up until this season, the record belonged to the legendary Paolo Maldini, who played 902 matches only for AC Milan.
"It's a huge achievement," acknowledged G. Buffon. "I didn't know that I was so close to this record. I only found out about it before two matches. I was told that I had already reached Paolo's record."
"I am extremely happy and proud of what I have done. I am glad for myself that I could stay at the highest level for so long," added the goalkeeper.
