G. Chiellini defends L. Suarez: punishment too harsh

Italian national football team defender Giorgio Chiellini, who was bitten on the shoulder by Uruguayan Luis Suarez in the last World Cup match, stated that he does not hold a grudge against his assailant. The Italian unexpectedly expressed that the punishment given to the Uruguayan is too severe.

“I don't feel any joy, anger, or revenge towards L. Suarez for what happened on the field. There is only anger and disappointment about the result of the match”, - wrote G.Chiellini on his website.

In the scandalous match, the Uruguayan footballers defeated Italy 1:0 and eliminated the Europeans from the championship. In the 80th minute of the match, G. Chiellini and L. Suarez clashed in the penalty area, but the referee did not notice any foul play. Shortly after, the Italian player showed his shoulder to the referee, showing bite marks, while L. Suarez was lying on the ground holding his mouth.

On Thursday, FIFA announced that L. Suarez will be banned from playing football or engaging in any other football-related activities for four months. He will not even be allowed to attend his team's matches at the stadium.

“I have always believed that official decisions are unquestionable, but I think that L. Suarez was punished too harshly. At the moment, my thoughts are with him and his family, who are facing a difficult period.

I hope that at least he will be allowed to see his teammates during matches, as such a long disqualification could greatly distance them”, - wrote G.Chiellini.
