Gennaro Gattuso did not lead "Palermo" footballers for long. On Wednesday, the president of the "Serie B" club, Maurizio Zamparini, announced that he had decided to terminate the contract with the strategist, better known as the former Italy national team midfielder.
"With regret, I announce that G. Gattuso is dismissed from duty," M. Zamparini is quoted as saying in an official statement. "We expected a bit too much from him than he could offer to the club, whose audience demands a lot. The results showed that we were wrong in offering him the job."
For G. Gattuso, this was his first job as a head coach. The former "AC Milan" midfielder had previously worked at the "Sion" club as a player-coach. He arrived in Italy from Switzerland in June. The "Palermo" leadership ran out of patience after the team's defeat to "Bari" on Tuesday.
In six matches, G. Gattuso's team only won twice. The 35-year-old coach will be replaced by Giuseppe Iachini, who coached the "Siena" team last season.
Maurizio Zamparini is known in Italy as the "coach eater." He is famous for firing coaches. He has dismissed at least 26 coaches so far. It is difficult to determine the exact number because it depends on how the term "interim coach" is interpreted. In addition, M. Zamparini has even fired the same coaches multiple times.
Last season, he went through the services of three coaches - two of them had a second chance. He fired Gian Piero Gasperini, replaced by Alberto Malesani. The latter worked for three matches, then M. Zamparini brought back G. P. Gasperini. After two matches, the "coach eater" fired this coach again.
Finally, M. Zamparini turned to Giuseppe Sannino, who worked for three matches.
