G. Infantino: 40 national teams should compete in the World Cup

The candidate for the FIFA presidency Gianni Infantino believes that the World Cup should be expanded to 40 participants.

The UEFA General Secretary will participate in the elections taking place in February, where he will compete for the opportunity to replace the current organization's leader Sepp Blatter, who has been involved in a corruption scandal.

Infantino supported his proposal by using the example of "UEFA Euro 2016", where next year teams will no longer be 16, but 24 national teams.

"I believe that based on the experience of the European Championships, we should expand the World Cup," - Infantino told AP.

"Look at the qualifiers - some teams that have never made it in the past have now made it, while some that always made it in the past did not make it this year."

"So, in the qualification, it created a completely new dynamic. It generated additional enthusiasm. If we want to seriously improve football, the most important football event must involve more associations from around the world."
