G. Neville: "A. Wenger is either naive or arrogant"

Gary Neville identified Arsene Wenger's failure to acquire another defensive midfielder as arrogance.

On the "Sky Sports" show "Monday Night Football," expert Neville described Wenger's transfer policy as the main reason why Arsenal has not won the Premier League title since 2004.

Neville believes that the Gunners need to sign physically stronger players who can create a good balance in the team, alongside technical and agile footballers.

"Thinking that you don't need to adapt to the team's players, unwillingness to change the game plan based on the opponent - I really think that is arrogance," Neville said.

"It's either naivety or arrogance, because by playing this way, they are losing," he added.

Neville compared the current team with the early Wenger era when he had players like Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Vieira in his squad.

"I can't understand why they don't buy powerful players who could help those talented footballers they have now," Neville commented.

"You can make one mistake... but then he bought Mikel Arteta and turned him into a defensive midfielder, then - (Tomas) Rosicky, a winger, turned into a central midfielder, the same with (Aaron) Ramsey, (Santi) Cazorla. These are a series of mistakes made over a long period," Neville added.

"I think they are wonderful players, it's incredibly enjoyable to watch Cazorla. But I'm talking about Arsenal's chances of winning the league," Neville continued.

"Think about Cesc Fabregas or Paul Scholes, they are amazing footballers," Neville said.

"But you have to build a team around them, think about how to cover their weaknesses. To do that, Mourinho builds (Nemanja) Matic or even Ramires alongside Fabregas," Neville explained.

"We talked about players like P. Vieira, E. Petit, Gilberto, Martin Keown, Sol Campbell, Tony Adams, Steve Bould, all of them - very physically strong players," Neville emphasized.

"But suddenly all the key Arsenal signings from 2004-2009 - I can't find a word to describe them. Although I could, but I can't say that word on television," Neville continued.

"They are definitely not the players you can win the league with," Neville concluded.
