Gerard Pique, who presented the upcoming Davis Cup tournament, commented on reports that Lionel Messi's contract with Barcelona will include a clause next year that will scare the team's fans.
"El Pais" reported that Messi's current contract, which is valid until 2021, includes a clause allowing him to terminate the contract in 2020 and leave for another team for free.
This clause came into effect after the Argentine turned 32. Pique confirmed that this information is true.
"I have known for some time now that Messi's contract includes the possibility to leave Barca after the season," said the Catalan defender to "Cadena SER" radio.
"However, we know how committed Leo is to Barca and this clause doesn't scare me at all. Besides, he has earned the right to leave the team when he wants. After everything he has given to this club, Leo has every right to choose what is best for him," added Pique.
Messi himself has not mentioned any intentions to leave Barca. In his previous interviews, he has only mentioned that he would not rule out ending his career at his hometown club, "Newell's Old Boys."
