The Turkish football giant Istanbul club today announced that the new club coach will be the Romanian Georghe Hagi. This coach, known as one of the greatest Romanian players of all time, will replace Fatih Terim, who resigned at the beginning of the month.
39-year-old Hagi previously played for the "Galatasaray" team and won four Turkish championships as well as the UEFA Cup in 2000. After this success, he ended his career as a footballer and became the coach of the Romanian national team in 2001, but his team did not qualify for the 2002 World Cup. The new coach explained this failure by saying that he was not yet ready for such a big challenge. Last summer, the Romanian was appointed as the coach of the Turkish first division team "Bursaspor," but resigned after a unsuccessful start to the season.
Throughout his impressive career, Hagi played for Bucharest's "Steaua", , , and Istanbul's "Galatasaray" teams.
The previous club coach Fatih Terim resigned from his position on March 5, after the club was eliminated from the UEFA Cup and then lost 1-2 to the "Rizespor" team. Currently, in the Turkish championship, "Galatasaray" is in 6th place and lags behind the leaders "Fenerbahce" by 19 points.
It is worth mentioning that over the weekend, the president of "Galatasaray" Ozhan Canaydin was re-elected for another term.
