On Saturday evening, the final match of the 2016 German Cup was played at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

Two principal rivals clashed in the capital city - Munich's "Bayern" and Dortmund's "Borussia". Throughout the game, a fierce battle raged on, but after a penalty shootout, the Bavarians emerged victorious.

Throughout the full 90 minutes on the pitch, a tough battle unfolded. Pep Guardiola's pupils dominated possession and created more dangerous opportunities. The team led by Thomas Tuchel was dangerous on counterattacks, but neither team managed to score a winning goal.

No more serious opportunities were created during extra time, although some danger arose several times near both sets of goals. However, both teams failed to score, leading to a penalty shootout.

The first penalty from the "black and yellows" side was scored by Shinji Kagawa, but Arturo Vidal responded in kind. Manuel Neuer saved Sven Bender's penalty, and after Robert Lewandowski's accurate shot, Bayern gained the advantage. BVB also failed on their third attempt, and Joshua Kimmich missed his shot as well. The remaining two shots from both teams were successful, and "Bayern" celebrated another season trophy after a penalty shootout victory of 4-3.

"Bayern" reclaimed the German Cup title after a year's hiatus. This was the 18th time the Bavarians triumphed in this tournament.
