The leader of the French championship team, defender Ludovic Giuly, revealed to journalists that the French star Zinedine Zidane's mockery during the halftime break gave the team additional motivation in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final response match, which the French team won 3-1 and advanced to the next stage due to more away goals scored by the visitors.
Giuly said: "When we were going to the locker room after the first half, I approached Zizou (Zidane's nickname) and asked them to let us score a goal in the second half - so our team would beat 'Real', and the Spanish would still move forward... a respectable result for both teams.
However, Zidane sarcastically replied to me: 'Brother, can't you see we're not together?'
Zidane's face when he said that gave me at least 20 percent more motivation to win. I told my teammates about it, and we all ran onto the field determined to win."
