Greece national team defender continues his career in Portugal - a player from Milan club was bought by the country's champion Lisbon. The footballer has signed a three-year contract with the new club, but the financial terms of the transfer are not disclosed.
28-year-old G. Karagounis, who became a European champion with the Greek national team in 2004, moved to Italy from Athens' "Panathinaikos" club two years ago, but he did not fit in well in the star-studded "Inter" and played only 20 matches in the "Serie A" league.
Last season, under the guidance of Italian Giovanni Trapattoni, "Benfica" won the Portuguese championship, but this season with coach Ronald Koeman, they have suffered one defeat and played two draws in the first three matches, repeating the club's worst start to the season since 1977.
Interestingly, G. Karagounis may not be very popular in Lisbon - representing Greece in last year's European Championship, he scored one of the goals against the Portuguese national team. However, even though the teams later met again in the tournament final, he could not play due to disqualification, and the hopes of Portugal winning the championship at home were "killed" by the Greeks.
