One of the leaders of FC Barcelona, Gerard Pique, revealed an interesting story about the beginning of his career in "The Players Tribune."
At the age of 17, the Catalan decided to move to the Manchester United club, where he was nurtured by the biggest stars of the Premier League.
"My life could have turned out very differently if not for coach Alex Ferguson. I arrived in Manchester as a boy and left as a man. At that time, football was just a pleasant hobby for me, and I did not understand its business side at all. Ferguson took care of me from the very first day and was like a second father to me," Pique said.
The 31-year-old defender also recalled a shocking incident with Manchester United's goalkeeper Roy Keane.
"Before the match, we were waiting in the locker room for the call to step onto the field, and I was overwhelmed with nervous tension. After all, there were stars like Giggs, Ferdinand, and Nistelrooy on the field. There was a deadly silence in the locker room, and suddenly my mobile phone started vibrating. Roy, sitting nearby, simply snapped and at first did not understand where the sound was coming from. He started running around the locker room and shouting for the owner of the mobile phone to confess.
It took me three attempts to confess. He just fumed and yelled at everyone. I almost wet myself. But at the same time, it was a good lesson.
Now it is 2018, and all the players check their phones before the matches. In 2006, it was a different world, and especially in the Manchester United team, you couldn't do that. It was one of the thousands of mistakes I made while representing Manchester United," Pique said.
