Swedish national team striker Henrik Larsson has announced that he is retiring from the national squad. The 34-year-old striker announced his retirement on Monday.
"Now is the time for me to retire," he told Swedish television channel Canal+. "I will play for one more year with the club 'Helsingborg', but I am clear about my decision to retire from the Swedish national team."
During his 13 years representing Sweden, H. Larsson appeared in 93 matches and scored 36 goals. His most memorable moment with the national team was winning the bronze medal in the 1994 World Cup in the USA.
In his career, the striker played for Rotterdam's "Feyenoord", Glasgow's "Celtic", and "Barcelona" clubs. With the latter, he became a UEFA Champions League winner last season, and now he represents his hometown team, "Helsingborg", where he made his debut on Monday in a match against "Hacken".
In 1998 and 2004, H. Larsson was named Sweden's Player of the Year. He ended his national team career in the World Cup round of 16 match against Germany, where the Swedes lost 0-2 to the tournament hosts, and the experienced striker missed a penalty kick in the second half.
