Legendary Bulgarian national team player Hristo Stoichkov left the position of head coach of the national team of his country on Wednesday and signed a contract with the Spanish mid-table team Celta Vigo.
The Galician club fired head coach Fernando Vazquez on Monday, after his team lost 4-2 to Huelva's "Recreativo" over the weekend and is at risk of relegation from the top league.
Before officially signing the contract, H. Stoichkov resigned from the position of coach in Bulgaria, although just a week before he publicly declared his belief in the national team and his intention not to step down.
The former "Barcelona" player H. Stoichkov, known for his impressive playing style, took over as coach of the Bulgarian national team in the fall of 2004, replacing Plamen Markov. However, he failed to lead his country to the 2006 World Cup.
In the qualifying matches for the 2008 European Championship, Bulgaria, in Group G, has 9 points after 5 matches, trailing by two points from the second-placed Romanians. The former semifinalists of the 1994 World Cup will play against Belarus in June.
H. Stoichkov himself stated that he took over the Spanish team to take a step forward in his coaching career.
