FIFA is preparing to decide in January whether there will be more teams in the 2026 World Cup than before. The world football leadership is leaning towards expanding the number of teams in the tournament from 32 to 40 or even 48. FIFA President Gianni Infantino hopes that a decision can be announced after a council meeting in January in Zurich. "The general attitude is more positive. Football quality is rising worldwide," said G. Infantino about the possibility of accepting more national teams. Replacing the discredited and removed Sepp Blatter after scandals, G. Infantino said that allowing more national teams would create a greater "football euphoria." The 2026 World Cup should take place in North America, and the tournament could be organized by FIFA itself, not the local organizing committee. G. Infantino has already presented a plan in which FIFA will "completely control all money movements." The world football leader has already emphasized that the organization will closely monitor how money is spent during the 2018 and 2022 tournaments in Russia and Qatar.
