History repeated itself: VAR saved "Tottenham" team from failure in Manchester

On Saturday evening, intriguing seventh round matches were played in the English Premier League. At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City clashed with Tottenham from London. Pep Guardiola's team, for the second time in these years, had to swallow a bitter pill in the final minutes of the match - Gabriel Jesus scored a goal in the 92nd minute to put City ahead 3-2, but after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed and Tottenham once again escaped unscathed from their opponent's fortress. The match started with a very active game from the defending English champions, Man City. The Spurs defense had no time to relax and already in the 20th minute they conceded a goal - after a fantastic pass from Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling scored with a header from a sharp angle. However, Tottenham quickly found a way to respond to their opponents and three minutes later the score was leveled again. Erik Lamela caught Ederson off guard from about 20 meters and directed the ball into his goal with a strong shot. The first half didn't end there - in the 35th minute, once again after K. De Bruyne's pass, Sergio Aguero left Hugo Lloris without a chance. In the second half, the picture didn't change much, except that unlike the first half, the Man City players were the first to attack from their own goal. In the 56th minute, shortly after stepping into the box, Lucas Moura sensationally equalized in the game after a corner. This was the second strike by the Tottenham team into the goal area. Later, there was still a clear domination by Man City, but that didn't help them quickly regain the advantage. In added time, Man City managed to score a third goal and it seemed like they would snatch three points dramatically, but their triumph was short-lived - Gabriel Jesus's goal was overturned after a VAR review by Michael Oliver. His VAR colleagues in the room recorded Aymeric Laporte's handball when the ball landed at G. Jesus's feet after the corner. Just like last season in the Champions League quarterfinals, now Man City had to accept the most unpleasant part of the VAR system. Result: Man City 2 - 2 Tottenham 20' [1 - 0] R.
