Strategist Roy Hodgson apologized to the team's fans for a sensational defeat in the English League Cup tournament.
The 'Reds' at home had to admit the superiority of the "Northampton" club, which is only in the fourth league, after an 11-meter penalty shootout.
"We played against opponents from a lower league. Any result other than victory is very bad," said Hodgson.
"It's a big disappointment. We knew it would be hard, but I am disappointed because I expected a better performance."
And he added: "We just have to congratulate "Northampton" and apologize to all the fans who came to the stadium hoping for a victory. The players have to take responsibility. I take it for the chosen lineup, as I sincerely believed that it would be able to defeat the opponents."
