One of the best goalkeepers in the history of the Spanish national team, Iker Casillas, revealed on his official Twitter account that the 2016 European Championship was his last with the national team.
The 35-year-old goalkeeper, along with his other teammates, finished their journey at the European Championship on Monday. It was the first European competition where I. Casillas was not the main goalkeeper for the team - he was replaced by David De Gea in this tournament.
Having not played in any matches for the Spanish national team at this championship, I. Casillas became the most capped player in any European national team. The goalkeeper wore the "La Roja" jersey 167 times.
In his official account, the Spaniard shared the ending of a scene from the movie "Rambo 2," where the main character announces his retirement: "I am very proud of the fans who show me love with #GraciasCasillas. Now and always, we are all with Spain!"
The legendary goalkeeper of Real Madrid first wore the Spanish national team jersey in 2000. In total, I. Casillas remained faithful to "La Roja" for 16 years.
I. Casillas' trophy cabinet with the Spanish national team is impressive - two European Championships and one World Cup trophy.
Un orgullo sentir el cariño de la gente en #GraciasCasillas hoy y siempre todos con la @sefutbolhttps://t.co/i9RQf01ZDM
