One of the coaches of the Icelandic national team, Heimir Hallgrimsson, did not spare good words for his team and fans after the sensational match against England. According to the strategist, Icelanders have not yet shown all their abilities.
Yesterday in Nice, the last round of the 2016 European Championship quarterfinals took place. The English, considered as one of the tournament favorites, unexpectedly fell under Iceland's feet and sensationally withdrew from the tournament. England had taken the lead after a penalty kick, but Iceland managed to not only equalize the score but also take the lead in just a few attacks.
"The fast equalizing goal was a decisive moment in these matches. We were a bit disturbed when we conceded such a fast goal, but our response had even greater significance. Psychologically, this was very strong," said the coach, who also works in Iceland as a dentist.
"They didn't want to bother with us and wanted to settle all matters at the beginning of the match. It's unknown what would have happened if we hadn't managed to equalize the score so quickly.
We always believe in ourselves - that's the reason why we are in this tournament. If we are ready to squeeze even more out of ourselves, then this is just the beginning. People will talk about this day for a long time. Now we have a chance to go even further. We are realists, we have a game plan, and we can use it," added H. Hallgrimsson.
Iceland will face the hosts France in the quarterfinals of the European Championship.
