Important changes in the CONCACAF Futsal Championship matches © lff.lt

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced changes to the futsal championship in this region, where the teams that will participate in the World Championship taking place in Lithuania this fall will be determined. According to the original plan, the tournament organized in Guatemala was supposed to include 16 teams divided into 4 groups, but the number of teams has shrunk - French Guiana, Martinique, and Guadeloupe will no longer participate, so the tournament will start with 13 teams. It was also decided to organize the championship in one place - in the capital city of Guatemala at the "Domo Polideportivo" arena, which has a lot of experience in organizing major futsal events, including the 2000 World Championship. CONCACAF will continue to follow the previously drawn lots, but to ensure that each group has at least 3 teams, the Dominican Republic team with the lowest ranking was moved to Group A.

All groups look as follows:
Group A: Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominican Republic;
Group B: Panama, Mexico, Suriname;
Group C: Costa Rica, Canada, Haiti;
Group D: Cuba, United States, El Salvador, Nicaragua;
Group matches, where the teams will play each other once, will take place on May 3-5, and later the two best teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals will be played on May 7 and all four winners of the quarterfinal stage matches will immediately secure their spots in the World Futsal Championship, which will take place in Lithuania this fall. The semifinals and finals will be played on May 8 and 9, respectively. This tournament was supposed to take place last year, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed to this year. The defending champions in this championship will be the Costa Rican team, who triumphed in 2016.
