fter New Year, major changes will take place in the UEFA Champions League - for the first time in the history of this tournament, the VAR (Video assistant referee) system will be used.

The UEFA Executive Committee voted on Monday in Dublin that the VAR technology will be introduced starting from the quarter-final stage of this season.

Initially, it was announced that the VAR system would only be used in a few matches this season to fully prepare for the next season. However, UEFA decided not to wait and the quarter-final stage starting in February could bring more accuracy to the matches.

It is worth mentioning that with the help of the VAR system, the referee can review incidents such as questionable penalties, possible offside goals, red cards, and showing cards to the wrong player.

This season has already seen some controversial referee decisions - Cristiano Ronaldo's red card for an alleged dive in the penalty area and Raheem Sterling's simulation for a penalty were both overturned after VAR review.
