On Wednesday evening, the first leg of the second semi-final of the English League Cup was played. Southampton faced Liverpool at home. Jurgen Klopp's players suffered a minimal defeat, but will try to make a comeback in the return match.
The entire match was a tight battle on the pitch. The visitors from Liverpool spent more time with the ball, but were passive in the final stages of their attacks.
In the 20th minute, Southampton took the lead. A sloppy defensive play by Liverpool allowed Nathan Redmond to score with a precise shot in the penalty area, where he was left unmarked.
Throughout the rest of the game, Liverpool tried to find the equalizer, but there was no real threat to Fraser Forster's goal.
The second leg will take place at Anfield Stadium on January 25th.
