After playing 30 matches in the Eredivisie championship in the Netherlands over the weekend, the intrigue in the championship increased even more, as the country's champions PSV Eindhoven continue to drop points.
This time, the league leaders were unable to overcome NAC Breda in seventh place in an away match. The first half of the game ended goalless, and in the second half, the hosts scored first through Arne Slot. However, NAC's lead did not last long - twelve minutes later, Jefferson Farfan equalized for his team with a great individual effort, scoring a beautiful shot from about 27 meters that beat the home goalkeeper Edwin Zoetebier.
The successful team in the UEFA Champions League, Eindhoven, has been dropping points frequently in the national championship lately. A few weeks ago, they narrowly defeated Groningen and then struggled to win against the bottom-placed RKC Waalwijk. In the past two weeks, the Eindhoven team has failed to win. They played a goalless draw against Excelsior in their last match and were simply dominated in an away match against Ajax in the penultimate round.
Ajax, on the other hand, had an easier time over the weekend, defeating Heracles Almelo 3-0 at home. The hosts scored the first goal in the 11th minute through a fantastic penalty kick from about 30 meters by Wesley Sneijder. At the start of the second half, the team's attacking leader Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored two more goals in a span of two minutes, crushing all of Heracles' hopes.
AZ Alkmaar's players also secured a victory at home, defeating RKC Waalwijk 2-0. Shota Arveladze scored in the middle of the first half, and Julian Jenner added a second goal towards the end of the match.
More than half of the matches were won by FC Twente, who defeated FC Utrecht 3-0.
After the weekend matches, Ajax returned to second place, trailing leaders PSV by just three points. AZ is two points behind Ajax, and Twente is four points behind.
There are four rounds left until the end of the national regular championship.
