Milan's "Inter" president Erick Thohir agrees with "AC Milan" club representatives that the UEFA Champions League should be expanded.
This week, Inter's longtime director Umberto Gandini stated that AC Milan should be given a direct invitation to the strongest European tournament, as they have achieved many victories in the past.
UEFA reacted by dismissing any possibilities for reform, but Thohir, whose club is currently competing in the Europa League, still hopes that the system will change.
"Italy, England, France, and Spain are the biggest countries in the world of sports," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "For clubs from these countries to enter the Champions League is very important. Then they become even more visible."
"However, we must also respect countries like Ukraine or Azerbaijan, which also want to compete in Europe."
"The number of participants in the Europa League is increasing. Why can't the same happen with the Champions League?"
"Fans from all over the world would like to see the biggest clubs competing in the strongest tournament, so I don't see any reason why we shouldn't increase the number of participants."
Both Milan clubs have together won 10 Champions League trophies in their history. However, in recent years, the teams have been performing worse, and last year not a single one managed to climb even onto the Serie A podium.
