Officials in Italy have confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the circumstances of the death of Davide Astori, the captain of "Fiorentina" in Florence.
The footballer, who had just turned 31, passed away in his sleep from Saturday to Sunday night. The exact cause of the defender's death is not yet known, so, at least for now, the possibility of accidental homicide is not ruled out. In fact, initiating such a case is the only way to obtain permission for an autopsy.
"We have initiated an investigation based on the hypothesis of accidental homicide," - the chief prosecutor of Udine, Antonio De Nicolo, told "Radio Rai."
"Charges against unknown individuals have not been made. We have arranged for an autopsy, which will be conducted shortly."
It seems that no criminal activity is suspected, but officials will strive to consider all possible possibilities.
"We have a duty to determine whether Astori's death was a tragic accident or if someone knew something," - De Nicolo later told "ANSA."
"At the moment, no one is accountable, and it doesn't seem like there is anyone who could potentially be involved."
"The start of this judicial process will allow us to identify any responsibility."
Astori will be laid to rest at the "Santa Croce" basilica in Florence on Thursday morning.
