Freshly baked European champions Italians will miss out on the World Cup for the second time in a row. Italy's national team suffered a 0-1 defeat at home to North Macedonian footballers in the qualifiers. Throughout the whole match, Roberto Mancini's players had the initiative in their hands, possessed the ball for more than 65% of the time, took 32 shots on goal, and won 16 corners. However, all these statistics didn't bring any tangible benefits. The hero of North Macedonia became Aleksandar Trajkovski, who scored in extra time of the second half. It is worth mentioning that Italians played against Lithuania in the group stage of the World Cup qualifiers. Ultimately, the European champions were defeated by Switzerland in the group, failing to beat Northern Ireland away and dropping points. Italy also missed the 2018 World Cup, exiting the tournament in the group stage in 2010 and 2014.
