Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff heavily criticized the current national team after the 2016 European Championship qualifier match against Turkey, which ended in a draw.
Last year, the Dutch managed to reach the semi-finals of the World Championships at home, only scoring in extra time, and in the qualifying group they are only in third place, falling five points behind the second-placed Iceland.
"The Netherlands against Turkey were appalling. No one did what they were supposed to," Cruyff wrote in De Telegraaf.
"Defenders simply passed the ball to the goalkeepers, and they in turn passed it back to the defenders. The game was dictated by unimaginative people. We don't want that. The problems just keep getting bigger."
"Looking at the level of the Eredivisie and the performances of Dutch clubs in the Champions League and Europa League makes it clear what the national team is capable of. We are not living through the best times in any aspect, and one can only guess when we will wake up from this nightmare."
"The main problem with the Netherlands is coaching, coaches, and the coaching system itself. The only clear thing is that the situation has to change. The Netherlands against Turkey looked embarrassing.
