"Southampton" will likely lose their captain Jose Fonte, who has requested a transfer.
There is still a year and a half left on the current Portuguese's contract, but at the age of 33, he is looking for new challenges.
Club director Les Reed revealed that a new contract had been offered to the defender. However, even improved financial terms did not change the veteran's decision.
"He had several opportunities to improve the situation. He has the right to refuse," Reed told BBC Radio Solent.
"He clearly stated that he wants to consider transfer options."
"Right now, Jose wants to leave the club. He has formally requested a transfer."
However, the "Saints" director revealed that no offer for the Portuguese national team member has been made yet.
It is worth noting that in the summer of 2010, Fonte, who has played 288 matches for "Southampton," was of interest to "Manchester United."
