J. Klopp criticized the match referee after the defeat in Naples

"Liverpool" started their UEFA Champions League title defense unsuccessfully - already in the first match "the Reds" suffered defeat.

In Italy, "Napoli" sent "Liverpool" packing with a score of 0:2. For them, this was the first failure of the season, not counting the loss to "Man City" after 11m penalty shoot-out.

"Napoli" expanded their victory at the end of the match - Dries Mertens scored from the penalty spot at first, and Fernando Llorente added the final touch.

Jurgen Klopp admitted that his team didn't play their usual football, but also criticized the referee for the penalty kick.

"In my opinion, that wasn't a penalty kick. It was clear to see that Callejon went down before any contact occurred. Nevertheless, they scored a goal, and we can't change that now," said Klopp.

"You have to be critical of yourself. Today we could have performed much better. 'Napoli' looked great at times, but we also had our chances, we just didn't capitalize on them.

There were moments when we should have taken penalty kicks. I still don't understand why there was no foul given before Sadio was fouled, even though he was brought down three times in the same attack. At that moment, I didn't understand what was happening.

We lacked intensity, but, as I said, we controlled the game at times and didn't score just because of our finishing. You could see that both teams respected each other and worked hard in defense. Our biggest problem was that 'Napoli' attacked us immediately after losing possession of the ball," added the coach.

All of this over Napoli's penalty?

Robertson made an attempt to reach the ball yet he didn't touch it, while Callejon played it smart (cheap? Yes, but also smart) after that flick to get a penalty.

So even with the VAR check, the ref might still call for a penalty. pic.twitter.com/8HIcQEeHDu
