Joachim Low believes that the German national team will not be considered among the favorites to win the upcoming 2020 European Championship.
This evening, the German national team, rebuilt after the World Cup in Russia, will finish the European Championship qualifiers. In case of victory against Northern Ireland, the Germans will secure the first position, leaving the Netherlands behind.
Despite a successful performance in the qualifiers, J. Low is still not convinced that this German team is as mature as other top-caliber national teams.
"I think we can be satisfied with what we have achieved this year," the coach said at a press conference.
"When it comes to overall team improvement, we understand that other countries surpass us in this aspect. We can mention England, Spain, France, Italy, and Belgium – these teams have already gone through a transformation period. For example, the English have already shown in major tournaments that they can play very impressive football.
All these teams have been playing together for three years or more. The same goes for the Netherlands, which has had a well-balanced lineup for 3-4 years. We cannot say the same about ourselves, so for this reason I do not consider us favorites to win the championship.
"I can guarantee that all players will be prepared and give everything to achieve their maximum in the tournament," Low said.
The coach also added that he has not yet decided on the lineup that will go to the European Championship.
