On Saturday, the draw for the 2020 European Championship took place in the capital of Romania, after which one group was mostly discussed.
This is Group F, in which three potential tournament winners will compete next summer: France, Portugal, and Germany. They will be joined by another national team that has won their qualifying tournament group: Iceland, Bulgaria, Hungary, or Romania.
After the drawing ceremony, the coaches of the French and German national teams briefly shared their thoughts. Both Joachim Löw and Didier Deschamps were excited about the spectacle that fans will see, but acknowledged that a tough battle awaits to advance to the next stage.
"The first impressions are that we will face top-class matches against France and Portugal," said Löw. "We will fight against the current European and world champions."
"I believe that the players are also looking forward to these matches. We understand that we are in the 'group of death' and teams will need to show their maximum capabilities to progress.
I have no doubt that we will see a real football spectacle. We have home matches to look forward to, so I'm really excited for it to all begin," added the strategist.
Similarly, Didier Deschamps spoke, with his team set to face matches in Bucharest and Munich.
"This is a tough group, as both Löw and Santos understand. Everyone knows that we are in the 'group of death', but we have to accept it and start preparing," said the World Cup winner.
"We have to be ready from the start of the tournament, as the first matches will take place in Munich against Germany. They will play at home, which is a huge advantage.
Both the Germans and Portuguese have incredible squads," added D. Deschamps.
