J. Mascherano became the record holder of the Argentine national team

The first World Cup match became special for the Argentine national team veteran Javier Mascherano.

The Argentinean stepped up to defend the honor of his team for the 144th time and became the sole leader in this statistical category in his country's history. Until then, the defender shared the first position with retired Javier Zanetti.

The 34-year-old veteran, who currently plays in China, still has the opportunity to improve this statistic in this championship as Argentina still has at least two group stage matches left in the tournament.
