For several days, Javier Mascherano, who was included in the expanded list of candidates, won the Golden Ball award and became the best "Barcelona" player of the 2013-14 season.
Another "Ballon d'Or" nominee Lionel Messi was recognized as the best club player three out of the last four times, but this time the award went to Mascherano, who plays as a defender for "Blaugrana".
"I thank everyone who voted for me," quoted the official club website the Argentine player.
"We will continue to work as before, and meet the high demands of the club."
This award was named after the Barcelona member Aldo Rovira, who tragically died in an accident in 2009. The best player is chosen by representatives of the club and the Catalan press.
"I was in the commission that decided who would receive the prize," said Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu. "I have to tell you, Javier, that at first there was some disagreement."
"But when your name came up, we unanimously decided, so you truly deserve the award."
"Barca is honored to have a player like you."
The 30-year-old Argentine was linked with a move to another team at the end of last season, but ultimately signed a new contract until 2018.
