Former legendary French national team forward Jean Tigana has left his position as head coach of the Istanbul club after both parties agreed to terminate his contract. This was confirmed by the Turkish club on Tuesday.
The 51-year-old strategist leaving Besiktas was announced after his team had no chance of overtaking the Istanbul team firmly established at the top of the table with only two rounds left until the end of the championship.
"We would like to thank Mr. Tigana for the time he spent at Besiktas club and wish him success in the future," the official statement on the Besiktas club website reads.
Former coach of Lyon, Monaco, and London's Fulham took over Besiktas in October 2005 after clashing and leaving Fulham, a move that he believed cost him his job with the French national team.
With two matches remaining in the Turkish league, Fenerbahce increased their lead over Besiktas to six points after drawing 2-2 with Trabzonspor on Sunday. Meanwhile, Besiktas suffered a 3-0 defeat away to Bursaspor who are in 10th place.
Fenerbahce secured the championship title as they have a better head-to-head record against Besiktas.
Last week, Besiktas won the Turkish Cup, defeating Kayseri Erciyesspor 1-0 in extra time in the final, finishing 17th in the championship.
