The coach of the Bundesliga champion Munich “Bayern“ team, Josep Guardiola, told journalists that he could indeed be fired if his team fails to beat Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday and does not reach the next stage of the UEFA Champions League.
The first leg of the teams' match in Ukraine ended goalless, although Bayern's goalkeeper Xabi Alonso was sent off the field in the second half. The German club is considered a clear favorite for the return leg.
“I am still a young coach, but I know what can happen if we don't make it to the next stage. I am coaching a top-level club and I know what happens when you don't reach the quarterfinals, semifinals, or finals. It's part of this business and you have to be prepared for it,“ Guardiola said before Wednesday's match.
Nevertheless, the Catalan coach reassured that he fully trusts his team and is confident that victory will be achieved.
“I'm an optimist. I have already said that we will achieve victory and I have not changed my opinion. We will play at home and we will succeed. Of course, they can surprise us, as it's unclear what style of play Shakhtar will choose - attacking or defensive. Nevertheless, I believe that tomorrow we will win and be in the quarterfinals,“ Guardiola said confidently in his players.
