Defending the title of the Italian champions, Turin's "Juventus" won at home against Verona's "Chievo" in the evening matches of the first round of the "Serie A" on Sunday and started the new season with a victory. The winning goal for "Juve" was scored by Frenchman David Trezeguet.

The champions' coach Fabio Capello once again decided to leave the team's talisman A. Del Piero on the bench and started the duo of Z. Ibrahimovičius and D. Trezeguet, while in the goal debut C. Abbiati, replacing G. Buffon who will not be playing due to injury until the beginning of the next year.

At the start of the match, threats from M. Camoranesi and D. Trezeguet duo were faced by the guests, but the first shot by the French was deflected by goalkeeper A. Fontana, and the second head shot passed completely beside the goal. "Chievo" attempted to score through S. Pellissier, but his attempt to chip the goalkeeper was slightly inaccurate.

D. Trezeguet continued to terrorize the visitors' defense line and once again his team was saved by A. Fontana, who deflected the shot by "Juventus" forward, and shortly after a pass from Z. Ibrahimovičius, the French national team forward shot just next to the post. However, D. Trezeguet finally found the target in the 36th minute, when his header went into the top corner of the goal.

The guests responded with their dangerous attack, but F. Cossato shot over the crossbar. After the break, "Chievo" no longer had their best first-half player, goalkeeper A. Fontana, who could not continue the match due to a shoulder injury and was replaced by L. Squizzi.

In the second half, "Juve" continued to maintain the initiative, but the new "Chievo" goalkeeper was hardly tested - in the 54th minute, D. Trezeguet did not share the ball with Z. Ibrahimovičius, and later after a corner, M. Camoranesi's header was punched away from the goal by the defender.

Neither team managed to score more goals, so the Turin club secured their first victory of the season with their usual minimal advantage and joined seven other teams in the league, each also having three points.
