Persecuted by injuries, English national team defender Jonathan Woodgate officially became a full member on Thursday when he finally transferred from the Madrid club for 7 million pounds sterling.
The 27-year-old defender represented his hometown team on loan from Real and was one of the team leaders. He arrived at Middlesbrough after spending two years in Spain, where he was constantly plagued by serious injuries.
The Englishman signed a four-year contract with the club, which currently holds the 14th place in the Premier League.
"This will be a great boost for us not only this season, but also in terms of plans for the next season," said Middlesbrough head coach Gareth Southgate at a press conference. "Opportunities to acquire a player of this caliber are rare. Renting him was already a big achievement, but acquiring all rights is a fantastic step for the club."
"This year he has proven to be one of the best players in the Premier League, and I don't waste my statements on such claims," added the former English national team defender."
