The „Kauno Žalgiris“ football club, which started preparing for the season on January 8, reached an agreement with their second newcomer. The 28-year-old Slovenian Žan Benedičič will arrive in Kaunas very soon.
The midfielder, who plays in a defensive midfield position, will become a full-fledged team member after passing a medical examination.
Ž.Benedičič has played in various age groups for the Slovenian youth national teams and spent the last seven years in the strongest football league in his country, representing the teams „Koper“, „Rogaška“, and „Celje“. With the latter team, he became the country's champion in 2020.
The colorful career of the Slovenian also began before playing in his homeland. At a very young age, in 2011, Ž.Benedičič joined the legendary youth system of „AC Milan“.
The Italian giant then loaned the young football player to „Leeds United“ (England), and later the new „Žalgiris“ player spent a season in the Italian „Serie B“ clubs - „Ascoli“ and „Como“. Before returning to Slovenia, he also played for „Leyton Orient“ (England) and „Olbia“ (Italy).
„I see him as a person who can contribute a lot when we need to create attacks. He is a very interesting and high-quality player, who sees the pitch well and can make non-standard passes. His experience and character traits will be extremely important,“ - said the team's head coach Glenn Stahl about the newcomer.
In the last six months, Ž.Benedičič played for the „Rogaška“ club in Slovenia's top league. In 19 league matches, the midfielder played 17 games, starting in all of them and making an assist.
