The legend of Bayern Munich Lothar Matthaus still cannot understand why his former club decided to sell midfielder Toni Kroos to Real Madrid in the summer of 2014.
After the 2014 World Cup, Real acquired the 26-year-old German for just 25 million euros. Recently, Kroos signed a new contract with the royal club and is currently considered one of the best midfielders in the world.
"I still don't understand why Bayern couldn't reach an agreement with Kroos. They could have improved the terms of the contract, and Toni would have repaid them with great performances on the field," Sportbild interviewed the legendary footballer.
"Kroos is the main player in Real's midfield. He is an excellent team player, trusted by all other players on the field. Kroos made no mistake by moving abroad. It was like winning the lottery.
"In my opinion, Kroos is currently the best midfielder in the world. I don't see anyone at his level. He was the best player in the national team. His only downside could be goals. However, under Zidane, he can improve this statistic, as Zidane has changed Kroos' role on the field to be more attacking," concluded L. Matthaus.
Playing in the defensive and central midfielder position, Kroos has scored only one goal this season for Real, but already has five assists to his name.
