Former German star Lothar Matthaus believes that Mesut Ozil could end his career in the national team after this World Cup.
According to him, the London "Arsenal" midfielder does not identify himself with the national team and generally does not understand how its fans feel.
The 29-year-old footballer has already faced a wave of criticism after Germany's defeat to Mexico, and Matthaus has now exacerbated the situation.
"I often feel that Ozil feels uncomfortable in the German national team jersey, he is not free and almost does not want to play", - the 1990 World Cup winner wrote in the newspaper "Bild". "There is no heart, no joy, no passion."
"It does not seem impossible that he will leave the national team after the World Cup."
"For the past year or two, Ozil has been playing at a much lower level, which certainly does not justify the guaranteed place given to him by Low."
Prior to the tournament, Ozil, together with Ilkay Gundogan, found themselves in a very controversial situation when they photographed with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Matthaus believes that the Arsenal midfielder does not even understand its significance.
"Ozil does not understand why there is so much discussion about him in Germany. He does not understand what the German people expect from a national team player, and that after the mistake with the photo with Erdogan, it would have been right to demonstrate loyalty to Germany and open up to the fans", - continued Matthaus.
The midfielder's apathy on the field often disappoints Arsenal fans, but he still remains one of the biggest stars of both the club and the German national team.
