L. Matthäus: Were We Lazy or Just Too Self-Confident?

Lothar Matthaus was completely shocked by the elimination of the German national team from the world championship.

This year it will definitely be impossible to defend the title of champions, as in the last G group match Joachim Low's players were beaten by South Korea with a score of 2-0.

Matthaus himself, who became the strongest in the world with his compatriots in 1990, says that the current team deserved the defeat.

"Now I know a little what it meant to be a fan of the England national team all those years," said the former defender. "However, we cannot complain in Germany. We finished as we deserved according to our performances."

"Perhaps we were lazy or just too confident. The sun has been shining on the Germans in recent years. Nevertheless, this day will be gray, with heavy rain."

"I have never seen the German team play so poorly in three consecutive World Cup matches. It was not at all the Germany I know."

"At home, fans were shocked and surprised. However, I am not angry that we got eliminated. I am angry at HOW we got eliminated."

"There will be many discussions in the coming weeks about the reasons for this. In my opinion, as long as Joachim Low remains the coach, this should be the end of the generation that won in 2014. From the very beginning, in the match against Mexico, I saw flaws."

"We didn't have the right lineup. We didn't have team spirit. We didn't have passion. We also didn't have leaders."

Most of Matthaus's criticism of the current team was directed at Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira, Manuel Neuer, and Mats Hummels.
