The Croatian national team on Monday painfully let go of victory from their hands in the match against Italy, when they conceded a goal in the 98th minute.
This Italian goal likely ended Croatia's performance at EURO 2024. Croatia now only has a small theoretical chance to advance to the next stage as one of the four best third-placed teams, but with just two points it is almost impossible to do so.
After the match, Croatian national team captain Luka Modric thanked the team's fans and said that football can sometimes be very cruel.
"We know that our fans stick with us even in the toughest situations. We want to thank them for that.
It's very unfortunate that we couldn't hold onto the victory, which would have guaranteed a place in the next stage. In the previous match we conceded a goal in the 95th minute, this time the goal came even later.
Football can be cruel. It seems like it just wasn't meant to be for us," said L. Modric.
The Croatian football legend did not confirm whether this could have been his last game for the national team.
"We will see, but now is not the right time to talk about it," added the Croatian.
