London's Arsenal has already agreed on the transfer of Lucas Torreira from Genoa's Sampdoria for a fee of £26.4 million, according to various sources, but the World Cup tournament has so far delayed it.
The midfielder, who represented the Uruguayan national team, refused to undergo medical examinations during the tournament because it was too important to him.
Nevertheless, Oscar Tabarez's proteges lost to French footballers yesterday, so now the 22-year-old player will be able to decide about his future.
"Being part of this team in this World Cup was something amazing," Torreira said.
"We are going home with our heads held high, because we could give our all until the end."
When asked if he decided to postpone the medical exam precisely because of the championship, the midfielder added: "Yes, we could have done everything differently, but I don't want to talk about other things."
"The World Cup is important, and being part of this team meant a lot to me."
"Nevertheless, now I have a lot of time and my future will be very clear."
"Most importantly, I am happy to have been part of this team and this World Cup, so I thank everyone who helped us."
In the quarter-final clash with the French, Torreira played the full 90 minutes and should become an important part of the Gunners next season.
