L. van Gaal: victory boosted confidence

The head coach of "Manchester United" Louis van Gaal was very pleased with his team after a victorious Manchester derby and shared his insights at the press conference.

About the result:

"I am very happy. I think we played a good first half. In the second half, we had opportunities to score a second goal, but then we fought until the end and held on. Many players struggled with fatigue, but that is logical when the last match was played on Thursday. I think our performance was fantastic. We did the same against 'Arsenal' when we beat them after playing on Thursday. I am very happy because winning here is not an easy task."

About Marcus Rashford's performance:

"He is a nominal striker and that's why I put him in that position because he can score goals and is an attacking type of player. I really like him, but he is 18 or 19 years old, so we have to wait and see how consistent he can be."

About Jesse Lingard playing in the number 10 position:

"He played well, so I put him in that position, but sometimes we also need a quick winger. It depends on the opponent and the game plan, but I think Jesse is more of a midfielder than a right winger. He has played very well there at least twice."

About team spirit and the remaining season:

"When I saw the dressing room, I think the win gave a push and a real belief in ourselves. It was fantastic to see. Of course, we fight in every match, but now we have achieved a very important and decisive result and we hadn't won at the 'Etihad' stadium for quite some time, so it was also a big celebration for the fans. I think we have to fight until the end. Now we have more matches at home than away. We don't lose much at 'Old Trafford' and we have the support of our fans."
