L. van Gaal: "Woodward doesn't know anything about football"

Having communicated with "The Guardian", Louis van Gaal remembered his career at Manchester United.

According to the Dutch football specialist, his career among the "Red Devils" could have been much better, but the club's management, especially Ed Woodward, contributed to quite poor results.

E. Woodward arrived at the club with the Glazers in 2005. In 2012, the Brit, who had previously worked as a financial advisor, took on the most important roles at the club - executive vice-chairman. He is now responsible for transfers, financial and commercial operations of the club.

"I worked with the management at Bayern, which is directly related to football. I always valued that," - L. van Gaal recalled in an interview.

"In turn, at Man Utd, Ed Woodward was chosen as chairman - a man who has no understanding of football. Before coming to the club, he worked as an investment banker.

"A club will never succeed when its main focus is on commercial activities," - the Dutchman continued.

When asked about "Manchester United" and the fact that E. Woodward and the club decided to terminate his services and bring in Jose Mourinho, L. van Gaal responded: "His appointment as coach was undoubtedly 'beautiful' from a business perspective. I don't hold a grudge against the club, as Mourinho was available and they offered him a contract.

"He wins matches, and for a club like Man Utd, winning trophies is the most important thing. How they win them is not important to them, or to most English fans.

They agree that football can also be defensive. I always tried to defend as high as possible, so we could be closer to the opponents' goal and launch dangerous attacks."
