Legendary German footballer Lothar Matthaus criticizes the appointment of former famous footballer Jurgen Klinsmann as the new coach of the German national team, stating that the decision may have been influenced by political circumstances.
43-year-old L. Matthaus currently coaches the Hungarian national football team and says that he would consider the possibility of becoming the coach of the German national team. He also mentioned that the connection with Stuttgart could be one of the reasons why Gerhard Mayer Vorfelder, President of the German Football Association (DFB), supported Klinsmann's candidacy.
"He (G.M. Vorfelder) puts forward his people, whom he knows from Stuttgart," said L. Matthaus. "G.M. Vorfelder is interested in strengthening his position as is often done in politics."
G.M. Vorfelder previously served as the president of "VfB Stuttgart", where Klinsmann was playing at that time.
Klinsmann has no coaching experience. After ending his football career in 1998, he moved to the USA, where he still resides. He was appointed as a coach after offers were rejected by O. Hitzfeld and O. Rehagel.
"I heard that Klinsmann won't be in Germany every weekend because he wants to stay in California (USA) and this could be a problem," mentioned L. Matthaus, listing possible issues.
