Defender Lee McCulloch has signed a new three-year contract with the club. The Scottish national team player's contract still had two years remaining, but he was offered better conditions and additional years to stay in the Premier League club.
"I have fulfilled my ambitions to play in the Premier League and for my country - why should I leave the club?" - said 28-year-old L. McCulloch to the "Wigan" website.
"Lee is one of my most consistent players and he shows what this club is all about," added the team's manager Paul Jewell. "He has talent, an amazing attitude, dedication, and is a true professional. He can play as a defender or as an attacker, and he is a player who is highly valued here."
The defender joined "Wigan" in March 2001 for £700,000 from "Motherwell", and defending the honor of the English club, he appeared in 211 matches and scored 41 goals.
Last season, after moving up from the lower English Championship to the Premier League, "Wigan" footballers surprised critics by reaching the Carling Cup final for the first time in the club's history, where they were defeated by the English giants "Manchester United". In the league, they finished in a respectable 10th place.
